The drive to religion seems to urge the full development of the individual personality, because the symbols produced are characterized by their central function: to reconcile the opposing tendencies of the psyche, such as conscious-unconscious, inner-outer, reason-instinct, intellect-imagination, empirical-mysterious, active-passive, etc…Hence, for Jung the psyche is structured in polarities. Their tension generates the energy of life. The polarity which encompasses in its symbolism all the psychic polarities is the masculine-feminine.
